Are you registered to vote in the 2015 Young Mayor elections?
Tower Hamlets Council is encouraging youngsters to have their say in the 2015 Young Mayor elections. Young people aged 11-17 who don’t study in a Tower Hamlets school must register by Friday, January 10 to vote in the 2015 Young Mayor elections.
To register, young people should visit www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/YoungMayor and complete the registration form. Alternatively, they can complete the form at any youth centre or by calling 020 7364 3091.
Students currently attending a secondary school in Tower Hamlets will automatically be added to the young mayor’s electoral register and don’t need to take any action now.
Over 20 young hopefuls have been going through a special training programme designed by the council and Young Mayor’s team for the past five weeks.
Each session was designed to give the candidates an insight to the different aspects of the role from public speaking to chairing meetings.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said: “The Young Mayor scheme is a great way for young people to get involved with the council and I am committed to working with the young people in our borough in developing our services which helps them grow and develop.
“We recently witnessed our Young Mayor, Mahdi Alam, take part in a number of debates in the House of Commons as part of the UK Youth Parliament’s annual sitting.”
Mahdi said: “Being a Young Mayor is a challenging role. Our training programme has been developed to push the candidates to reach their full potential in order for them to experience what it takes to be the Young Mayor.”
Once the training programme is complete the council will announce the candidates standing in the Young Mayor elections. Polling day will take place in January with the new Young Mayor and their team taking office in the first week of February.
Cabinet Member for Education & Children’s Services, Cllr Gulam Robbani, said: “Once again we have a strong set of candidates taking part in the Young Mayor scheme. I highly recommend those who are not studying in the borough to register to vote in order to have their say next month.”
