Her Excellency Abida Islam Assumes Role as Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK
On the morning of Monday, January 27, 2025, Her Excellency Abida Islam officially assumed office as the High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Ambassador Islam brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to her new role. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Mexican States from August 2021, presenting her credentials to the President of Mexico on September 14, 2021. Her tenure in Mexico was marked by significant strides in strengthening bilateral relations, with a focus on trade and cultural exchange.
From December 2017 to August 2021, Ambassador Islam served as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Republic of Korea, where she enhanced trade, investment, and cultural ties between the two nations. Notably, between 2012 and 2014, she was the first female Deputy High Commissioner at the Bangladesh High Commission in Kolkata, India, fostering cooperation in cultural, economic, and political spheres.
Her extensive diplomatic career also includes key positions in Bangladesh Missions in London, Colombo, and Brussels, as well as serving as Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, overseeing significant wings and advancing multilateral diplomacy.
Ambassador Islam holds a Master’s in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University, Australia, and a Master’s in Social Sciences (Sociology) from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Her appointment is anticipated to further strengthen the diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.
