UN hopes to see fair polls in Bangladesh
The United Nations has again stated it wants to see free, fair and open elections everywhere including in Bangladesh.
“And, as a matter of principle, we would like to see free and fair and open elections everywhere they are… they are held,” Spokesman for the Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said while briefing reporters at the UN headquarters on Monday.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the Myanmar government to ensure unobstructed humanitarian access in Rakhine State.
He also appealed to the international community to support those who have fled to Bangladesh.
Spokesman for the Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said this while briefing reporters at the UN headquarters on Monday.
European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council on Monday also sought steps for targeted restrictive measures against senior military officers of the Myanmar armed forces responsible for serious and systematic human rights violations.
Furthermore, the Council also sought measures for an extension of the existing embargo on arms and equipment which can be used for internal repression as well as options for its strengthening.
The EU also called upon Myanmar to ensure voluntary, safe and dignified return of displaced people to their homes.
