BNP-Jamaat coalition wins SCBA polls
Nominees of the BNP-Jamaat-led 20-party alliance backed lawyers’ panel (JAOP) Khandker Mahbub Hossain and AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon were reelected Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president and secretary respectively, retaining their leadership in the country’s apex court lawyers’ body.
Among the 14 executive committee posts, Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Panel (JAOP) bagged nine while ruling Awami League-led coalition Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (SASP) five posts.
Advocate M Harun-or-Rashid, convener of the seven-member election sub-committee, early Tuesday announced the two-day staggered election results that began on March 15.
According to the election results, Khandker Mahbub Hossain, also a BNP chairperson’s adviser, was elected president defeating SASP nominee Yusuf Hossain Humayun, member of Awami League advisory council, by 179 votes while AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, BNP joint secretary general, was elected secretary crushing Momtaz Uddin Ahmed
Mehdi by 408 votes.
Thirty-one candidates contested the election to the SCBA for 2015-16. The other elected office bearers are: vice-presidents Abul Khair (SASP) and ASM Muktar Kabir Khan (JAOP), assistant secretaries Delwar Hossain Mustafa Chowdhury (SASP) and Mazedul Islam Patwari (JAOP), treasure Shawkat Ara Begum Dulali (JAOP) , members Mohiuddin Shamim (SAOP), AKM Daudur Rahman(SASP) Anita Dasgupta (SASP), Shamima Sultana
(JAOP), Anwarul Islam Shaheen (JAOP), Mirza Al Mahmud (JAOP) and M Jasim Sarker (JAOP).
