{"id":2571,"date":"2014-09-15T10:55:01","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T10:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=2571"},"modified":"2014-09-15T10:55:01","modified_gmt":"2014-09-15T10:55:01","slug":"khaleda-zia-loses-court-battle-on-corruption-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/khaleda-zia-loses-court-battle-on-corruption-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Khaleda Zia loses court battle on corruption charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bangladesh\u2019s highest court on Sunday rejected appeals by opposition leader Khaleda Zia, clearing the way for her to stand trial on embezzlement charges that could see her jailed for life.<br \/>\nZia, a two times former prime minister and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), went to the Supreme Court seeking suspension of the proceedings, saying the lower court judge who has been hearing her cases was appointed illegally.<br \/>\nBut a Supreme Court bench headed by chief justice Md Muzammel Hossain dismissed her appeals, allowing the trials to go ahead in a special court that deals with graft cases, her lawyer Sanaullah Miah said.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have not got justice,\u201d Miah told AFP, adding Zia\u2019s trials in the graft court could still be delayed as the Supreme Court has not yet disposed of two more appeals against the charges.<br \/>\nEarlier the high court rejected similar appeals by Zia, prompting her lawyers to move to the highest court in a last-ditch attempt to stop the trials.<br \/>\nProsecutors have accused Zia\u2019s lawyers of time-wasting, saying proceedings have been delayed by dozens of times in the case.<br \/>\nZia and three of her aides are accused of siphoning off 31.5 million taka (about $400,000) from a charitable trust named after her late husband Ziaur Rahman, a former president who was assassinated in 1981.<br \/>\nShe is also accused of leading a group of five people, including her eldest son, in embezzling 21.5 million taka ($277,000) \u2014 funds which were meant to go to an orphanage set up in memory of her late husband.<br \/>\nZia, who has been excused from attending the trial, has called the charges politically motivated, aimed at destroying the BNP, which has vowed to topple the government of her arch rival Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.<br \/>\nThe 69-year-old leader was charged just weeks after Hasina was re-elected in a January 5 general election which the center-right BNP and its 18 opposition allies boycotted and denounced as a farce.<br \/>\nThe charges date back to Zia\u2019s last term as premier from 2001 to 2006 and can carry a life sentence, prosecutors have said.<br \/>\nZia, who first became premier in 1991, has a famously poisonous relationship with Hasina \u2014 an enmity which dates back three decades<br \/>\nThe January polls effectively became a one-horse race after the BNP and other opposition parties refused to field candidates over rigging fears.<br \/>\nNearly 200 people died in political violence surrounding the election as the opposition and security forces fought pitched battles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\r\n<script>(function(d, s, id) {\r\n  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\r\n  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;\r\n  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;\r\n  js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_GB\/all.js#xfbml=1\";\r\n  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);\r\n}(document, \"script\", \"facebook-jssdk\"));<\/script>\r\n <fb:comments href=\"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/khaleda-zia-loses-court-battle-on-corruption-charges\/\" font=\"arial\" num_posts=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" colorscheme=\"light\"  style=\"background:#FFFFFF;padding-top:0px;\r\npadding-right:0px;\r\npadding-bottom:0px;\r\npadding-left:0px;\r\nmargin-top:0px;\r\nmargin-right:0px;\r\nmargin-bottom:0px;\r\nmargin-left:0px;\r\n\"><\/fb:comments>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bangladesh\u2019s highest court on Sunday rejected appeals by opposition leader Khaleda Zia, clearing the way for her to stand trial on embezzlement charges that could see her jailed for life.
