{"id":2819,"date":"2014-11-11T17:22:50","date_gmt":"2014-11-11T17:22:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=2819"},"modified":"2014-11-11T17:22:50","modified_gmt":"2014-11-11T17:22:50","slug":"queen-leads-britain-in-silent-tribute-to-war-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/queen-leads-britain-in-silent-tribute-to-war-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"Queen leads Britain in silent tribute to war dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Queen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2820\" src=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Queen.jpg\" alt=\"Queen\" width=\"468\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Queen.jpg 468w, https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Queen-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a>Queen Elizabeth II lead Britain in paying silent tribute to the Commonwealth war dead on Remembrance Sunday, an annual event made particularly poignant this year on the centenary of the start of World War I.<br \/>\nThe 88-year-old monarch, senior royals and politicians including Prime Minister David Cameron laid wreaths at the Cenotaph national war memorial in London, as hundreds of veterans from more than 70 years of conflicts looked on.<br \/>\nSecurity was tighter than normal amid heightened fears of the risk of a terror attack, but there was no change to the customary program of marches and military music.<br \/>\nA 13-pounder World War I gun was fired at 1100 GMT, marking the start of two minute\u2019s silence observed by millions of people across Britain and at British military bases across the world.<br \/>\nRemembrance Sunday is the Sunday closest to Armistice Day on Nov. 11, the anniversary of the 1918 signing of the peace that ended fighting in World War I.<br \/>\nMore than one million people from the British Empire died in the four-year conflict, but the day has become a time to remember all the troops killed in wars since then.<br \/>\nIt is thought there has been only one year \u2014 1968 \u2014 without a British military fatality on active service since the end of World War II in 1945.
