{"id":3851,"date":"2015-02-22T19:14:27","date_gmt":"2015-02-22T19:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=3851"},"modified":"2015-02-22T19:14:27","modified_gmt":"2015-02-22T19:14:27","slug":"baghdads-first-female-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/baghdads-first-female-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Baghdad&#8217;s first female mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Zekra-Alwach.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3852\" src=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Zekra-Alwach.jpg\" alt=\"Zekra Alwach\" width=\"219\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a>A woman has been named as mayor of Baghdad for the first time, a government spokesman said Saturday, amid widespread corruption and rampant violence.<br \/>\nZekra Alwach, a civil engineer and director general of the ministry of higher education, becomes the first female to be given such a post in the whole country, where international rights groups have condemned women&#8217;s rights abuses.<br \/>\nAs mayor &#8212; the most important administrative position in the capital &#8212; Alwach will deal directly with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and holds has the prerogatives of a cabinet minister.<br \/>\nShe will begin work Sunday, according to a municipal source.<br \/>\n&#8220;Abadi sacked the (former) mayor Naim Aboub and named Dr. Zekra Alwach to replace him,&#8221; government spokesman Rafed Juburi said.<br \/>\nAboub&#8217;s removal was not designed as a punishment, although he was regularly accused on social media and by Baghdad residents as incompetent, the spokesman added.<br \/>\nHe made headlines in March 2014 when he described his city, beset by brutal sectarian violence and rife with corruption, as &#8220;more beautiful than New York and Dubai&#8221;.<br \/>\n&#8220;Aboub is a clown.
