{"id":48536,"date":"2018-12-01T15:39:56","date_gmt":"2018-12-01T15:39:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=48536"},"modified":"2018-12-01T15:39:56","modified_gmt":"2018-12-01T15:39:56","slug":"another-uk-minister-quits-over-brexit-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/another-uk-minister-quits-over-brexit-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Another UK minister quits over Brexit deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-48537\" src=\"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sam-Gyimah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"802\" height=\"520\" \/>British government minister Sam Gyimah quit late Friday over Prime Minister Theresa May\u2019s \u201cnaive\u201d Brexit plan, dealing her another blow in her fight to pass it through parliament.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The universities and science minister is the seventh member of May\u2019s government to quit since she brought back the draft Withdrawal Agreement from Brussels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gyimah, who voted to remain in the EU, said the deal was \u201cnot in the British national interest\u201d and that voting for it would set Britain \u201cup for failure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBritain will end up worse off, transformed from rule makers into rule takers,\u201d he wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is a democratic deficit and a loss of sovereignty the public will rightly never accept,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He did not rule out the possibility of supporting a second referendum, saying \u201cwe shouldn\u2019t dismiss out of hand the idea of asking the people again what future they want\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"alignleft quote-simple \"><p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script> <!-- Automatic size Responsive --> <ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1234237307185872\" data-ad-slot=\"7381563475\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins> <script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gyimah said Britain\u2019s exclusion from the EU\u2019s Galileo programme because of Brexit was a \u201cclarion call\u201d, saying it was \u201conly a foretaste of what\u2019s to come\u201d in negotiating a future relationship with the bloc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI have seen first-hand the EU stack the deck against us time and time again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Britain in June revealed that it had been formally excluded from future contracts for the programme that is intended for commercial uses such as logistics as well as for armed forces and emergency services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Brussels has said it will deny London access to Galileo\u2019s encrypted signals after Britain\u2019s EU departure next year, despite its estimated \u00a31.2 billion (Dh5.6 billion or $1.5 billion) investment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">May has said Britain would look to build its own system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gyimah, a former aide to prime minister David Cameron praised May\u2019s \u201cgrit and determination\u201d, but his resignation highlights the daunting task of getting the deal through parliament, with both Remainers and Brexiteers in her own party vowing to vote it down on December 11.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">May commands a wafer-thin majority in parliament, and around 100 of her own MPs have already promised to rebel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She did, however, receive backing from senior minister and prominent Brexit supporter Michael Gove, who warned that voting against the deal could scupper the whole process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s time for all of us to put our personal perfect plan to one side, recognise the reality of the choice we face, and start to bring the country back together again,\u201d he wrote in the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cGet this wrong and we may put in peril the Brexit the British people voted for and want us to deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\r\n<script>(function(d, s, id) {\r\n  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\r\n  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;\r\n  js = d.createElement(s);
