Built for the 1889 World\u2019s Fair, the tower \u2013 which soars to 324 meters in height and weighs 7,300 tons \u2013 still attracts nearly seven million visitors every year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite calls for its demolition in the years after the exhibition, it soon became the most iconic feature on the Paris skyline and is France\u2019s most visited monument. \u201cThe Eiffel Tower is a must,\u201d said Laurie, a tourist from Canada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Christophe Girard, overseeing cultural affairs at Paris\u2019s city hall said the recent fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral \u2013 which destroyed its spire and most of its roof \u2013 had awakened people to \u201cthe importance of our heritage\u201d, and that it \u201ccan disappear or be damaged\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The tower was the tallest structure in the world for 41 years until the construction of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930.
