{"id":49214,"date":"2019-07-15T21:51:06","date_gmt":"2019-07-15T20:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=49214"},"modified":"2019-07-15T21:51:06","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T20:51:06","slug":"eu-agrees-sanctions-against-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/eu-agrees-sanctions-against-turkey\/","title":{"rendered":"EU agrees sanctions against Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-4428\" src=\"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Federica-Mogherini.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"803\" height=\"544\" \/>European Union officials on Monday agreed political and financial sanctions against Turkey after Ankara went ahead with drilling operations off Cyprus despite repeated warnings, European diplomats said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe conclusions on Turkey have been adopted and they will be made public in the coming hours,\u201d the EU\u2019s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini told reporters after a meeting with members states\u2019 foreign ministers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The details are not due to be published until 10:00 pm (2000 GMT), but the most serious measure is understood to be a cut of 145.8 million euros ($164 million) in the European funds allocated to Turkey for 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Investment Bank has been asked to revisit the conditions set out for providing financial support to Ankara, according to several European sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU is also expected to downgrade its dialogue with Turkey, without cutting it off completely.<br \/>\nAnd one senior European diplomat added: \u201cIt has not be ruled out that targeted sanctions be adopted at some time or other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU last month warned Turkey it could face sanctions if it did not cease what the bloc called \u201cillegal\u201d drilling in Cyprus\u2019s exclusive economic zone. Last week, diplomats began discussing what measures to impose.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was the discovery of huge gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean that sparked the dispute between EU member Cyprus and Turkey. Ankara sent two ships to carry out drilling off the Cypriot coast despite the warnings from the EU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cyprus has been divided between the Republic of Cyprus and a northern third under Turkish military control since 1974 when Turkey invaded in response to a coup by a Greek military junta.
