He was 61.<br \/>\nHorner was one of the most popular film composers of the last 30 years, and his \u201cTitanic\u201d soundtrack &#8211; with its hit Celine Dion song, \u201cMy Heart Will Go On,\u201d written with Will Jennings &#8211; became the biggest-selling movie-score album of all time, selling an estimated 30 million units worldwide. He scored more than 100 films in all and was often in demand for big popcorn movies.<br \/>\nMost recent were \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man\u201d and \u201cThe Karate Kid\u201d remake, but he also scored \u201cHow the Grinch Stole Christmas,\u201d \u201cThe Perfect Storm,\u201d \u201cClear and Present Danger,\u201d \u201cHoney I Shrunk the Kids\u201d and \u201cAliens.\u201d He was born Aug. 14, 1953 in Los Angeles, the son of production designer Harry Horner.<br \/>\nHe spent his formative years in London, attending the Royal College of Music, but he returned to L.A. and earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in music at the USC and did post-graduate work at UCLA. Horner began his career with AFI shorts and low-budget Roger Corman films including \u201cThe Lady in Red\u201d and \u201cBattle Beyond the Stars,\u201d quickly graduating to major studio films including \u201cStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan\u201d and \u201cStar Trek III: The Search for Spock.\u201d<br \/>\nHis 1980s output demonstrated his versatility, including scores for \u201c48 Hrs.,\u201d \u201cCocoon,\u201d \u201cWillow\u201d and \u201cField of Dreams.\u201d In the 1990s he added \u201cThe Rocketeer,\u201d \u201cSneakers,\u201d \u201cPatriot Games,\u201d \u201cLegends of the Fall\u201d and \u201cRansom\u201d to his resume before hitting the jackpot, both financially and awards-wise, with &#8220;Titanic.&#8221;<br \/>\nIn addition to his two Oscars, he won song and score Golden Globes for the James Cameron film. He received eight other Oscar nominations, including seven for the scores of \u201cAliens,\u201d \u201cField of Dreams,\u201d \u201cApollo 13,\u201d \u201cBraveheart,\u201d \u201cA Beautiful Mind,\u201d \u201cHouse of Sand and Fog\u201d and \u201cAvatar.\u201d<br \/>\nAs a songwriter, he earned an Oscar nomination and two 1987 Grammys including Song of the Year for \u201cSomewhere Out There,\u201d written with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil for the animated film \u201cAn American Tail.\u201d<br \/>\nHe did the \u201cAmerican Tail\u201d sequel \u201cFievel Goes West\u201d and musically launched another popular animated-film franchise with \u201cThe Land Before Time.\u201d He earned four more Grammys including one for instrumental composition for 1989\u2019s \u201cGlory\u201d and three for \u201cTitanic\u201d including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.<br \/>\nHe also scored Michael Jackson\u2019s \u201cCaptain EO\u201d theme-park attraction at Disneyland in 1986 and composed music for a handful of TV movies including \u201cA Piano for Mrs. Cimino,\u201d \u201cExtreme Close-Up\u201d and \u201cFreedom Song.\u201d Horner dabbled in other realms of music-making, including composing new music for Katie Couric\u2019s stint at the \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d in 2006 and, in recent years, classical commissions.<br \/>\nIn November 2014 he premiered a double concerto for violin and cello in Liverpool, England, and March 2015 saw the premiere of his concerto for four horns in London.
