{"id":4965,"date":"2015-06-25T10:18:35","date_gmt":"2015-06-25T09:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=4965"},"modified":"2015-06-25T10:18:35","modified_gmt":"2015-06-25T09:18:35","slug":"icc-names-zaheer-as-its-new-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/icc-names-zaheer-as-its-new-president\/","title":{"rendered":"ICC names Zaheer as its new president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/zaheer-abbas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4966\" src=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/zaheer-abbas.jpg\" alt=\"zaheer abbas\" width=\"303\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/zaheer-abbas.jpg 303w, https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/zaheer-abbas-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a>Former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas was named president of the International Cricket Council for the next year at the annual conference of the sport&#8217;s world governing body in Barbados on Tuesday.<br \/>\nZaheer, 67, filled the vacancy in the largely honorary role left by Mustafa Kamal, who resigned with a blast at the organisation in April after falling out with the ICC&#8217;s Indian chairman over who should hand out the World Cup trophy.<br \/>\nKamal, as the titular head of the ICC, expected to present the trophy but chairman Narayanaswami Srinivasan awarded it to the victorious Australian side at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in late March.<br \/>\nZaheer, one of his country&#8217;s finest batsmen who played 78 Tests and 62 one day internationals from 1969 to 1985, is likely to prove a less controversial holder of the office.<br \/>\n\u201cI feel truly honoured and humbled to be appointed as the president of the governing body of our great game,\u201d he said in a news release.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is the sport which has given us friendship, respect, recognition and an opportunity to serve our countries in different capacities. Personally speaking, it has given me more than I can ever possibly repay.\u201d<br \/>\nSrinivasan, who because of India&#8217;s financial muscle holds the real power at the ICC, congratulated Zaheer.<br \/>\n\u201cZaheer&#8217;s outstanding career as a stylish right-handed batsman is reflected in his remarkable record with 108 first-class hundreds and more than 7,500 international runs,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cZaheer is clearly an iconic cricketer who always played the game with skill, flair and in the true spirit.
