{"id":5014,"date":"2015-06-26T17:56:02","date_gmt":"2015-06-26T16:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=5014"},"modified":"2015-06-26T17:56:02","modified_gmt":"2015-06-26T16:56:02","slug":"uk-population-increases-by-500000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/uk-population-increases-by-500000\/","title":{"rendered":"UK population increases by 500,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/UK-population.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5015\" src=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/UK-population.jpg\" alt=\"UK population\" width=\"276\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>The UK population grew by almost half a million last year to 64,596,800, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.<br \/>\nThe \u201cabove average\u201d increase of 491,100 from mid-2013 to mid-2014 included net migration adding 259,700 to population growth, the ONS figures show.<br \/>\nThis was more than \u201cnatural growth\u201d \u2013 births minus deaths \u2013 which added 226,200.<br \/>\nThe ONS said a quarter of births were to mothers born outside the UK.<br \/>\nThe overall number of births was down compared with the previous year, continuing a downward trend seen since a peak in mid-2012.<br \/>\nThe population increase was above average compared with rises over the last decade, the ONS said.<br \/>\nAgeing population<br \/>\nThe figures also found that the number and proportion of older people in the UK continued to rise.<br \/>\nThe median age of the population \u2013 the age at which half the population is younger and half the population is older \u2013 in mid-2014 was 40 years, the highest ever estimated.<br \/>\nThere were 11.4 million people (17.7% of the population) aged 65 and over in mid-2014, up from 11.1 million (17.4%) in the previous year.<br \/>\nOf the UK\u2019s individual nations, England\u2019s population grew the most quickly during the year, growing by 450,800 people (0.84%).<br \/>\nWithin England, London had the highest population growth, up 1.45%.
