{"id":5282,"date":"2015-07-13T04:44:13","date_gmt":"2015-07-13T03:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=5282"},"modified":"2015-07-14T04:55:00","modified_gmt":"2015-07-14T03:55:00","slug":"british-hc-orders-to-seize-lutfur-rahmans-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/british-hc-orders-to-seize-lutfur-rahmans-property\/","title":{"rendered":"British HC orders to seize Lutfur Rahman\u2019s property"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lutfur-Rahman1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1930 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lutfur-Rahman1-300x165.jpg\" alt=\"Lutfur-Rahman1\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lutfur-Rahman1-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lutfur-Rahman1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A former mayor has had hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of assets frozen by a High Court judge after being found guilty of corrupt and illegal practices.<\/p>\n<p>Lutfur Rahman \u2013 who was the directly-elected mayor of Tower Hamlets in east London \u2013 was also ordered to disclose detail of income and expenditure.<\/p>\n<p>Rahman was in April found guilty of wrongdoing by Election Commissioner Richard Mawrey QC after an Election Court trial in London.<\/p>\n<p>Four voters \u2013 led by writer and film maker Andy Erlam \u2013 had taken legal action against Mr Rahman under the provisions of the Representation Of The People Act.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mawrey also said Rahman should pay the four voters\u2019 legal costs \u2013 estimated to be \u00a3500 000 \u2013 and ordered him to hand over \u00a3250,000 on account.<\/p>\n<p>But lawyers for Mr Erlam today told a High Court judge \u2013 at a hearing in London \u2013 that nothing had been paid.<\/p>\n<p>Barrister Francis Hoar said Rahman had been shown to be \u201cin substance, dishonest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Justice Edis ordered Rahman to disclose income and expenditure going back five years and said assets to the value of \u00a3350 000 would be frozen.<\/p>\n<p>The judge said Rahman should also disclose tax returns going back seven years.<\/p>\n<p>He said he would review the case in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Rahman was not at today\u2019s hearing but was represented by barrister Edward McKiernan.\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">-The Independent<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\r\n<script>(function(d, s, id) {\r\n  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\r\n  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;\r\n  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;\r\n  js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_GB\/all.js#xfbml=1\";\r\n  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);\r\n}(document, \"script\", \"facebook-jssdk\"));<\/script>\r\n <fb:comments href=\"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/british-hc-orders-to-seize-lutfur-rahmans-property\/\" font=\"arial\" num_posts=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" colorscheme=\"light\"  style=\"background:#FFFFFF;padding-top:0px;\r\npadding-right:0px;\r\npadding-bottom:0px;\r\npadding-left:0px;\r\nmargin-top:0px;\r\nmargin-right:0px;\r\nmargin-bottom:0px;\r\nmargin-left:0px;\r\n\"><\/fb:comments>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former mayor has had hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of assets frozen by a High Court judge after being found guilty of corrupt and illegal practices.
