{"id":7053,"date":"2017-09-22T14:35:07","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T13:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=7053"},"modified":"2017-09-22T14:35:07","modified_gmt":"2017-09-22T13:35:07","slug":"palestinians-mark-muslim-new-year-at-al-aqsa-mosque","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/palestinians-mark-muslim-new-year-at-al-aqsa-mosque\/","title":{"rendered":"Palestinians mark Muslim New Year at Al-Aqsa Mosque"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5029\" src=\"http:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ramadans-second-Friday-prayer-at-al-Aqsa.jpg\" alt=\"Ramadan's second Friday prayer at al-Aqsa\" width=\"293\" height=\"172\" \/>Scores of Palestinians on Thursday celebrated the Islamic New Year at East Jerusalem&#8217;s Al-Aqsa Mosque amid calls to protect the holy site from continued Israeli violations.<br \/>\n\u201cYou are the guardians of the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque, the thorns in the side of the [Israeli] occupation,\u201d Jerusalem Grand Mufti Mohammed Hussein told worshippers gathered in the mosque compound.<br \/>\n\u201cYou came today despite all restrictions and obstacles,\u201d he said, \u201cright under the noses of the aggressors who never stop trying to impose new facts on the ground.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThey [the Israelis] have no right to this place,\u201d Hussein added. \u201cThey think their brutal incursions and unjust attacks will break your will; but they will be disappointed.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cToday, you came to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in confidence and with faith, while they [the Israelis] come here in fear,\u201d he declared.<br \/>\nScores of Palestinian Muslims converged on the iconic mosque Thursday morning to celebrate the Islamic New Year, singing religious anthems and distributing candy.<br \/>\nPalestinian public figures and political factions, for their part, urged Palestinians to mark the occasion at the mosque, while the Israeli authorities temporarily closed off the site to Jewish settlers.<br \/>\nFor Muslims, Al-Aqsa represents the world&#8217;s third holiest site after Mecca and Medina. Jews, for their part, refer to the area as the \u201cTemple Mount\u201d, claiming it was home to a large Jewish temple in ancient times.<br \/>\nIsrael occupied East Jerusalem, in which the Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.
