{"id":7784,"date":"2018-03-21T22:53:10","date_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/?p=7784"},"modified":"2018-03-22T18:03:02","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T18:03:02","slug":"tower-hamlets-kids-go-the-extra-mile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.thesunrisetoday.com\/index.php\/tower-hamlets-kids-go-the-extra-mile\/","title":{"rendered":"Tower Hamlets kids go the extra mile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hundreds of Tower Hamlets schoolchildren took part in today\u2019s Daily Mile event at Mile End stadium.<br \/>\nThe Daily Mile is an initiative that encourages children of all ages and abilities to run a mile to improve their physical, social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing.<br \/>\nIt has been implemented across schools in the UK. Tower Hamlets schools have the highest uptake among London boroughs, with 32 schools taking part.<br \/>\nAround 900 children from over 17 schools ran a mile on the track of Mile End Stadium,\u00a0 and then collected their medals.<br \/>\nChief Executive of Tower Hamlets Council, Will Tuckley also ran the mile. Twice.<br \/>\nHe said: &#8220;It was fantastic to get out in the fresh air and on the race track with the children.\u00a0 Exercise is so important for children\u2019s mental and physical health.<br \/>\n\u201cOver half of primary schools in the borough have brought the Daily Mile into their school day and teachers have said what a good effect it has on helping children concentrate on their school work. It also helps the children feel good about themselves for achieving that mile.\u201d<br \/>\nAlso running and handing out medals and certificates were:<br \/>\n\u2022 Cllr Danny Hassell<br \/>\n\u2022 Sir Sam Everington, local GP and Chair of the Tower Hamlets CCG<br \/>\n\u2022 Dr Somen Banerjee, Director of Public Health<br \/>\nThe children completed the run in their school uniforms and at their own pace.\u00a0 They were joined by some teachers, school and council colleagues.<br \/>\nChildren\u2019s fitness levels and cardiovascular systems have developed as a result of participating in the Daily Mile.\u00a0 In fitness tests, which are carried out on a half a term basis, children are able to run for longer and be less out of breath.
