Tower Hamlets will see thousands of people race through parts of the borough on 22 April for the highly anticipated annual Virgin Money London Marathon.

\nChief Executive Will Tuckley said:
\n\u201cWe are pleased to be a part of such an exciting, world-class event again this year and are looking forward to soaking up the energy on the day.\u201d
\nStudents from seven schools in the borough will also be taking part in the Mini London Marathon \u2013 run over the last three miles by children between the ages of 11-17, made up of 36 participants.
\nThe Marathon reaches Tower Hamlets 13 miles into the race at the iconic landmark, Tower Bridge. It continues through the borough for a further nine miles, touching West India Dock Rd, Commercial Road and continues through the Isle of Dogs before the home stretch \u2013 London Bridge to the Mall.
\nThe following areas are affected:
\nWapping<\/strong>
\nThe route will pass along The Highway between miles 13 to 14 and again on the opposite carriageway between miles 21 to 22. Free local parking is available for Wapping residents at Bishop Challoner School, from 4pm on Saturday 21 April until 4pm on Sunday 22 April.
\nIsle of Dogs<\/strong>
\nResidents on the east and west side of Westferry Road will be able to exit onto Westferry Road and travel south to Manchester Road until 9:45am on Sunday 22 April. From 9:45am no vehicle movements will be possible until after 2pm.
\nCanary Wharf<\/strong>
\nThe Marathon route through Canary Wharf is unchanged from 2017. Westferry Road and Heron Quays have ongoing building work and spectators should plan their visit. Shops, cafes, restaurants and transport links remain open.

\nPublic transit is strongly recommended for runners and spectators; however, a DLR strike is planned for four days from 4am on Friday 20 April until 4am on Tuesday 24 April.
\nTransport for London has said it will work with the DLR operator, KeolisAmey Docklands to provide \u201cas much of a service as possible,\u201d but it\u2019s best to check the journey planner for the most up-to-date travel options.
